Laser + Holistic Dental practices general dentistry, such as generic check ups, scale and cleans or simply offering an alternative professional opinion. However, we do so within the boundaries of our overall holistic health philosophy, ensuring that every service we offer is scrutinised to the point that we can confidently say we are meeting our patients dental needs in the best way possible.
Holistic Dentistry is a contemporary approach to dental treatment; examining the patient’s overall health and well being – not just their teeth. Our dentists at Laser + Holistic Dental recognise the profound connection between the mouth and the other parts of the body. As such the Holistic approach is a conscious one, the aim is to understand how treatments of the teeth, mouth and jaw can affect the individual’s overall health as well as recognizing that the mouth can reflect certain conditions and identify potential risk factors for the development other health conditions.
The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, describes a holistic dental practitioner as one “who believes that treatment of individual conditions takes place only by reference to the whole.” The term “Biological Dentistry” is often used interchangeably with “Holistic dentistry”. Biological Dentistry advocates for the delivery of high quality, modern dental healthcare including reduction of negative environmental impact from the dental sector.
There is a strong emphasis on scientific research to support the protocols and position of Biological Dentists. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology is the leader in science based Biological Dentistry. The IAOMT is a trusted academy of allied professionals, providing scientific resources to support new levels of integrity and safety in healthcare.”
Unfortunately, Holistic Dentistry has become somewhat of a buzzword, with varying degrees of correctness. A dentist who may not place mercury amalgam fillings for example, is not necessarily a truly holistic practitioner.
Please read our detailed health philosophy that serves as the basis of all our treatments at Laser + Holistic Dental here.
While many dental clinics avoid looking after children due to the additional level of care required, we at Laser + Holistic Dental have a strong family focus and recommend an early introduction to dentistry.
From age 2 children’s baby teeth have usually erupted and bite problems are already observable. Exposure to dentistry from early childhood with simple, regular check ups can eliminate the fear that can develop from visiting a dentist with a toothache – often as a result of accidental trauma. The latter situation is very overwhelming and is one reason why people fear dentists, because their first experience was emotionally traumatic and linked to another source of pain.
Laser + Holistic Dental recommends that children from the age of two are seen every six months to identify potential problems as they develop and to reduce the formation of dental phobias. All of our dentists are also extremely passionate about preventing more serious orthodontic issues that may require extractions and/or braces by addressing alignment issues in the child’s early years. It is much easier to influence the shape of the jaw as a child is growing. The earlier this starts the easier it is to manage and as always, prevention is better than the cure – giving your child confidence as they reach their teenage years, kickstarting them into a healthier and happier future.
We recommend that all parents with young children educate themselves to ensure their children develop proper dental hygeine habits.

Laser + Holistic Dental has been using laser technology in many of our procedures for over 10 years. Lasers are multi-functional devices that offer broad spectrum anti-microbial treatment to fight infection in gums and teeth. Lasers also simultaneously stimulate positive healing responses of your soft tissues including blood vessels, muscles, nerves, skin and gums – turning on your own cells regenerative potential.
At Laser + Holistic Dental we prefer using lasers for surgical procedures compared to a traditional approach with a scalpel. Using a second wavelength spectrum, lasers become highly effective cutting technology, sealing the wound and promoting quick blood clotting to accelerate healing and reduce pain and inflammation.
For more about the benefits of using lasers for dental procedures read more here.
Dental crowns & bridges
For teeth that have lost a large percentage of their natural tooth structure our dentists at Laser + Holistic Dental recommend full ceramic crowns as an alternative to the cheaper metal restorative solutions. Our clinic has a strict non metal policy preferring to use ceramic and zirconia crowns and bridges in order to prevent galvanic corrosion or conduction of electromagnetic fields in the mouth.
Many people are genetically susceptible to metal sensitivities, so using non metal dental products will prevent triggering any allergic response. From an aesthetic point of view metal crowns, bridges and veneers do not transmit natural light leaving your smile looking dull and lifeless.
At Laser + Holistic Dental our use of ceramic alternatives will enhance your smile. To learn more about the advantages of non metallic crowns and bridges click here.
SMART Certified mercury filling removal
Most people may not be aware that dental amalgam, commonly known as “silver fillings”, contain almost 50% mercury forming an alloy with other metals (including copper, silver and tin).
The dental profession has experienced a considerable and consistent natural patient trend away from choosing dental amalgam in fillings. Some of our dentists working at Laser + Holistic Dental, switched to using mercury-free dental filling materials more than 30 years ago, to meet the patient preferences of a more natural looking appearance and for those who were concerned about the perceived adverse health effects of mercury.
At Laser + Holistic Dental we take a range of precautions to reduce mercury exposure to our patients, dental staff and the environment. We are proud to be the first dental clinic in Australia to be certified by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) for offering the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique (SMART).
– While removing dental amalgam the patient has an alternative air supply of either oxygen or happy gas (nitrous oxide) to ensure that toxic mercury vapour and particles are not inhaled.
– We also use non-latex rubber dams so amalgam particles are not ingested.
– At Laser + Holistic Dental we even use specific burs on our drills in conjunction with a constant stream of water keeping the area cool, reducing the formation of mercury vapour through heating.
– Our dental chairs are equipped with the Cattani Turbo Smart B system with an inbuilt amalgam retention system to prevent toxic mercury waste leaking into our waterways. The mercury waste is then disposed of via collection agencies as per government regulations.
– Our dental team are members of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT) and follow the IAOMT protocols for mercury hygiene.
Our dentists have spent years studying the adverse effects of dental amalgam and consequent mercury toxicity. Laser + Holistic Dental goes far beyond official dental safety standards and takes every precaution to minimise your exposure to mercury.
To learn more about our position on toxins like mercury amalgam – please read through our philosophy page here.
We recommend that if you have mercury amalgam fillings that you read through this page to learn more about the issue and what is required to have your fillings removed safely.
At Laser + Holistic Dental we have a unique approach to smile whitening, only using methods that avoid the risks of overheating tooth pulp and dissolving tooth enamel that other whitening procedures can pose. We avoid these two major problems of common bleaching techniques thanks to our specific laser wavelengths and the high quality whitening gels we choose.
At Laser + Holistic Dental we use the Fotona TouchWhite in-office laser whitening system, in conjunction with using pure, high concentrated hydrogen peroxide. After the procedure is completed we will also provide you with a home whitening kit to keep your smile spectacular. This also poses additional anti-microbial benefits for the gums.
The synergism of the in-office and home kit treatments yields a superior whitening effect than either treatment separately.

Snoring is more than just an annoying noise – it actually is the soft palate vibrating
indicating that your airway is not open properly. Snoring is a sign that you may be at
risk of obstructive sleep apnoea – where the tongue falls back in the throat and blocking your
airway during sleep. This means there is decrease in oxygen reaching your cells and
therefore an increase in pressure on the heart to pump oxygen around the body – what
we call an ‘accumulated oxygen debt’.
As such snoring and sleep apnoea are
linked with higher rates of serious health problems like heart attacks and stroke.
Laser + Holistic Dental offers the comfortable and convenient NightLase® treatment developed by Fotona to treat snoring and reduce the effects of sleep apnoea. NightLase® uses a special Er:YAG wavelength of laser that allows safe penetration of the oral mucosa tissue found at the back of your throat. This gentle wavelength triggers contraction of the oral mucosa tissue, creating a tightening effect that reduces soft palate vibrations. NightLase® is clinically proven to reduce snoring, and is quick, comfortable, “walk in walk out procedure” and far less invasive than traditional ENT surgical procedures and CPAP machines.
A full course of NightLase® consists of at least five separate treatment sessions over a six month period. An annual ‘maintenance’ appointment of one session may be necessary to maintain effectiveness of the treatment. At Laser + Holistic Dental we refer to respiratory and sleep medical specialists to diagnose sleep breathing disorders like obstructive sleep apnoea. In conjunction with NightLase® we can also offer other non-surgical solutions that can be used in combination or as an other alternatives such as orthodontics and oral appliances like MAS (mandibular advancement splints) designed to enlarge the naso and oropharyngeal airways.

Invisalign® was invented 20 years ago to provide a cosmetic alternative to traditional metal braces. The patented technology uses a series of clear, removable aligner trays that gradually shift your teeth into the desired position over time. Laser + Holistic Dental provides Invisalign® for patients who prefer no metal brackets and would like to avoid conventional braces. Braces in the early stages can often lacerate the interior of the mouth, and for those who react to metal jewellery and may have some level of metal allergy – they are likely to prefer a metal free orthodontic option. Unfortunately not everyone is a candidate for Invisalign®, generally due to narrow arches of the jaw or other irregularities. In these cases it would be appropriate to be referred to a specialist Orthodontist.
Contrary to popular belief Invisalign® is not a generic procedure. Favourable patient outcomes are dependent on the skills of your dentist or orthodontist to design the movements necessary to move your teeth into the correct position. Invisalign® then manufactures the aligners with 3D computer imaging technology to your dentist or orthodontist’s specifications. A complete course of Invisalign® generally takes 9-18 months depending on how often you wear the aligners and the degree of difficultly of your case. You will wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move little by little, week by week – until they have straightened to the their final position.
Laser + Holistic Dental will do a review on how things are progressing at least every 8 weeks. Invisalign® is great for adults and teenagers, proving popular for its natural look allowing you to smile with confidence.

Dentures come in two types – partial and complete, and are designed as a removal replacement for missing teeth. Laser + Holistic Dental can offer metal free dentures for patients who prefer this option. Dentures are an alternative for those who are not suitable candidates for dental implants or are in the transition to implants following dental extractions. Metal free dentures designed at Laser + Holistic Dental look good, and are strong, comfortable and biocompatible.

Root canal treatment
Some clinical studies show that a large portion of root canals can still have bacteria in the root and surrounding bone. This is why dental abscesses can recur in root filled teeth. The microorganisms in these dental abscesses have been known to migrate to other body organs.
For our patients that choose to have a tooth root filled, at Laser + Holistic Dental we use lasers to clean out the root canal system. This technique is known as the Photon Induced Photoacoustic Streaming (PIPS). This is an extra measure used in conjunction with conventional method of rotary mechanical debridement and chemical disinfection in order to reduce the risk of recurrence of infection following a root canal procedure.
The conventional material used in root canal fillings is latex based gutta-percha which may be a factor in triggering latex allergies. It also contains the heavy metal cadmium and the cements used contain formaldehyde and silver.
If you remain unsure whether to have an abscessed tooth root filled, retreated or extracted, then we will happily refer you to the appropriate dental specialist known as an Endodontist to assist you in making this decision.

Metal free dental implants
Titanium dental implants emerged over 50 years ago as a reliable solution to replacing extracted teeth. Currently, titanium implants remain as the conventional standard in oral implantology. Today a new emerging, metal free material is becoming a viable alternative for metal sensitive individuals: Zirconium oxide, also known as zirconia.
Just like titanium, the main research drivers are coming from European scientists. Many of the leading titanium implant companies are now developing their own version of zirconia. Zirconia does not seem to provoke an allergic/foreign body reaction in genetically susceptible people in distinction to titanium. Laser + Holistic Dental is committed to offering metal free oral implantology to meet patient preferences.
Our dentists regularly travel to Europe to receive training from experts in this field.participate follows a metal free dental policy, using Zirconia implants as an alternative to materials such as titanium.
Laser + Holistic Dental follows a metal free dental policy, using Zirconium implants as an alternative to materials such as titanium. The durability and price of zirconium implants is comparable to metallic alternatives, with the added biocompatible and aesthetic advantages. Zirconium implants are the same colour as teeth and are totally biocompatible, meaning they do not trigger any immunological response leading to further complications.
With an increase in the use of metals such as titanium for surgical purposes we are seeing a consequent increase in allergic reactions to these metals. Zirconium does not have any risk of adverse reactions and also will not conduct electromagnetic fields through the mouth and head as with metal implants.

At Laser + Holistic Dental we encourage a hygienic and healthy oral environment for you and your family by offering treatments to keep your breath fresh and your gums healthy. Many people aren’t aware that gum diseases can be contagious. To make sure your saliva and gums are healthy Laser + Holistic Dental uses a combination of Ozone water, Photo Activation Disinfection, Dental Lasers and probiotics to disinfect and promote healthy microflora in the mouth plus stabilise and regenerate collagen connective tissue found in gums.
Research has recently found a genetic predisposition to gum disease. We recommend that everyone is tested at Laser + Holistic Dental to see if you are at risk, and if so we will discuss management plans to suit your needs.

Problems with the Temperomandibular joint (TMJ) or jaw joint can often lead to a lot of problems such as headaches, ear and eye pain and tinnitus. If left untreated the joint can degenerate causing severe pain and contributing to arthritis and hearing loss. Our diagnostic approach at Laser + Holistic Dental is to obtain accurate 3-dimensional imaging of the jaw, conduct an orthopaedic range of motion and refer for a home sleep study to establish whether you have the sleep disorder of bruxism.
If you are diagnosed with a TMJ disorder we have a variety of non-surgical methods to realign the jaw and treat the problem depending on your needs. We use soft lasers to reduce painful symptoms while we assess the range of your TMJ problem. Sometimes orthodontic intervention is needed to alter your bite and tooth positioning or we may need to make you a comfortable oral appliances to prevent clenching and grinding during sleep. Without any intervention clenching and grinding can cause significant degeneration of your TMJ area and the forces exerted are certainly a factor leading to further complications such as cracked teeth. For complex cases, a referral to an Oral Medicine specialist would also be appropriate.

Happy gas & sedation
At Laser + Holistic Dental we understand that some people may get anxious about visiting the dentist. Our team aims to offer you the most relaxing dental experience possible and as part of that goal we have happy gas available on request. Happy gas is a combination of oxygen and nitrous oxide that it is safe and reversible, allowing you to remain totally in control through the procedure. There are very few side effects (including euphoria, light headedness, reduced sensation) and you will be able to drive a car straight away after your appointment and get on with the rest of your day.
Some of our patients who need or prefer a deeper level of sedation may choose to use oral sedation to help them relax. In these circumstances, we recommend eating a high protein meal before your procedure and make sure you have organized for someone you trust drive you from the clinic to your home for the remainder of the day. We provide a complementary dose of Vitamin C and Vitamin B12 at the completion of the dental appointment. This will assist with quick metabolism of the local anaesthetic and sedative.
We offer a free trial of happy gas on request so inquire for your next visit. For more information on happy gas and our other sedation options visit this page.
For the past few years Laser + Holistic Dental has been using advanced European technology that is being for regenerative dentistry and medicine. Regenerative dentistry uses concentrated growth factors (CGF) derived from your own blood thereby eliminating the concern of being affected by another human’s or animal species cells. In our dental treatments we are using CGF biological membranes to seal wounds, speed recovery times, reduce infection, minimise post surgical pain, reduce tooth sensitivity and regenerate bone loss caused by periodontal disease, and infections.
Using CGF is a simple, comfortable and convenient procedure. We take your own blood just like a standard blood test and then put the tubes into a centrifuge machines. This device has a patented spin cycle which separates the blood into 4 layers to create a healing biomaterial that has a unique set of characteristics and features. We can then use these products for a variety of different purposes such as bone and tissue grafting. CGF is more biological active than alternative grafting products, because CGF uses live autologous cells with high levels of CD 34 stem cells to treat the affected areas. The cells come from your own body so there is no chance of rejection or adverse immune responses. CGF also does not contain any allergenic or chemical additives as with other grafting methods.
Please visit this page to learn more about the science behind regenerative dentistry and CGF treatments.

X-rays & Imaging
Laser + Holistic Dental offers our patients in house digital x-ray and CBCT scanning. Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is a modern imaging technology compared to the traditional chemically processed x-ray. CBCT provides an additional detail of the anatomical structures to produce 3D images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways, bones and airway. CBCT also offers the additional advantage of lower radiation exposures relative to normal CT scans.
We use X-rays and CBCT scans for diagnosis of many problems and is regarded as being the standard of care to assess your needs for oral surgery and implantology. While it is important to have up to date dental imaging, we are also mindful of managing your radiation exposure. Please let us know if you might be pregnant as a precautionary measure.
